Anthrax Drummer Charlie Benante Covers Rush’s ‘Anthem’

At least two Rush tribute albums have already been done — 1996′s ‘Working Man: Rush Tribute’ and 2005′s ‘Subdivisions: A Tribute to Rush’ — but it looks like another one is in the pipeline. Anthrax drummer Charlie Benante recently laid down the beat for a cover of Rush’s ‘Anthem,’ and we have the video.

Anthrax is certainly no stranger to covering other artists. Over the years, they’ve recorded their own versions of works originally done by artists like Cheap Trick, Alice Cooper, Twisted Sister, Queen, Kiss and Black Sabbath, to name only a few. But this will be the first time they’ve done a Rush track for an album.

‘Anthem’ was on Rush’s second release, 1975′s ‘Fly By Night.’ The hard-driving song certainly spotlighted the band’s legendary drummer Neil Peart doing what he does best, but it’s always cool to see someone else’s take. Needless to say, Benante doesn’t disappoint.

As for Rush themselves, they’ve wrapped up sessions on ‘Clockwork Angels,’ their first new album in almost five years. It’s set to drop May 29, but the first single from the disc, ‘Headlong Flight,’ will make its way to radio on April 19.
