Motorists should plan for short delays while traveling through the park.
WEST GLACIER, MONT – Repair work recently began on three segments of the rock guard wall along Going-to-the-Sun Road (GTSR) between Triple Arches and Oberlin Bend. Visitors should plan on fifteen minute delays with one-lane traffic control during daylight hours and traffic control lights at night. Both lanes of travel will be open on Labor Day weekend, from September 3 through September 5. After Labor Day construction on the GTSR resumes and sections of the road return to their one-lane status. Construction on the wall will continue until winter weather determines otherwise.
St. Mary Entrance Fee Collection and Aquatic Invasive Species Stations Replacement Project
The segment of roadway between the two entrances/exits into the St. Mary Visitor Center parking area will be closed for construction from September 19, 2016 to May 26, 2017. Traffic will be detoured through the St. Mary Visitor Center parking areas. Fee collections will be administered in the visitor center during the construction period when the GTSR is open to travel.
Beginning October 17 Going-to-the-Sun is closed to vehicular traffic beginning at the 1.5 mile gate Hiker-biker travel can access the east side of the GTSR by using the newly reconstructed pathway near the St. Mary Visitor Center. The area remains closed to traffic until May 26.
Avalanche Creek Footbridge Construction
On September 6, the south portion of the Trail-of-the-Cedars, between the GTSR and the trailhead to Avalanche Lake will be closed in order to begin work on the Avalanche Creek footbridge. The boardwalk portion of the trail leading to the Avalanche Lake Trailhead is still open. Flaggers will be on-site to accommodate campground traffic.
On September 20, the roadway into the campground will be closed to all traffic except for administrative and construction personnel. Due to a segment of the boardwalk being removed in order to access construction operations, this portion of the Trail-of-the-Cedars will be closed during construction.
