After an eight-week trial that often resembled a story arc on ‘The Sopranos,’ former mobster Whitey Bulger was found guilty of racketeering, conspiracy and 11 counts of murder by a jury in a US District Court on Monday.

The now 83-year-old Bulger was on trial for crimes he allegedly committed in the 1970s and 1980s while running Boston’s Winter Hill crime gang.

He spent 16 years on the run until he was finally arrested in 2011, and in an eventual 32-count indictment, prosecutors charged him with committing or ordering some 19 murders, plus other offenses including extortion, money laundering and drug trafficking.

Prosecutors told the jury of eight men and four women that corrupt FBI agents — who were Irish, like Bulger and his gang — turned a blind eye to the crimes in exchange for information about the Italian Mafia. Bulger maintained his innocence, and in particular, insisted he never cooperated with the feds or participated in the murders of women.

Sentencing is pending, but it is expected that Bulger will almost certainly spend the rest of his life in prison.
