The Southeastern Conference, winner of six straight national championships, took an early lead for a seventh, as the first BCS poll of the season gave the top two spots to Alabama and Florida.

The BCS factors in two different human polls (the Harris Poll and the USA Today coaches’ poll) and a variety of computer formulas to rank the teams. The top two at the end of the season will meet in the national championship game.

Alabama, the defending champion, is number one in the human polls and landed the top spot in the BCS, despite ranking third in the computer averages. Florida is ranked third in the Harris Poll and fourth in the coaches poll, but the Gators were boosted into the second spot by having the best average of the computer rankings.

Oregon, Kansas State and Notre Dame round out the top five, but any of them could still find their way into the title game. While Alabama and Florida do not meet in the regular season, if both teams remain undefeated they would meet in the SEC championship game, guaranteeing one of them a loss and likely excluding them from the national-title game.

LSU and South Carolina come in at numbers six and seven, respectively, giving the SEC four of the top seven spots. The Big 12 and the SEC each have seven total teams in the Top 25.
