Walk Don’t Run

It's reminds me of the old Ventures song, "Walk Don't Run" that I spin on my Puffman radio show occasionally. It's the Shelby School District Safe Route to School Walking and Biking Program getting underway again this spring season this Wednesday (April 4th) at the Shelby Middle School, the Shelby Civic Center and the intersection of Sheridan and Oilfield Avenue

Rust Never Sleeps

I had a chance to read some reports this morning (Friday) on crop conditions in the south (Oklahoma, Texas and Kansas) and I noted one comment out of Kansas that said that "the crops look good, but are really early"

Easter in the Golden Triangle

Yesterday I blogged about spring REALLY being here. Well, guess what? Easter is one week from this Sunday and what a special time of the year. A time of rebirth, renewal, new life, and pretty spring fashions

I Know That It’s Spring

No doubt about it. I know that it's spring and one way I know for sure is when the lenten lunches are taking place here in Shelby. Easter Sunday is only one week away (the Sunday after THIS Sunday) and St

Ostara (Vernal Equinox) Is Upon Us…And It’s Early!

It's Spring! It may not entirely feel like spring today, at least not yet. It's been an unseasonably warm winter, especially for those people living East of the Mississippi, but it's early too. The vernal equinox (defined as the "moment when the sun arrives at one of two intersection points of the ecliptic and the celestial equator, this point is located in eastern Pisces) arrived one day earlier than normal this year on March 20

A Sorryful Saga

You may recall that I've done several Puffman Blogs on Ruth McLaughlin's "Memoir from the Western High Plains".That is to say that ruthless Ruth grew up AND lived near Culbertson in eastern Montana. The book is "Bound Like Grass" and this is one powerful tome and one of the best I've ever read

Down there in the south 40

It's Ag Appreciation month and I'm gearing up to follow the custom cutters again this year. I understand that conditions "down south" have really "gone south"! A week or so of mid 80 degree temperatures, coupled with 30 to 35 mile per hour winds have literally stressed the Kansas, Oklahoma and Texas crops, causing visible blue circles (not to be confused with crop circles) and shriveled leaves in the fields

The late Marvin Gaye was right

There's a great deal of truth in Marvin Gaye's blast-from-the-past, "I'll Be Doggone". Marvin is actually the one who's gone and next month, some money from your billfold will also be gone if you don't have your dog vaccinated and licensed by next Wednesday, the 29th

Wild and Wooly out Williston way

I received a startling report this morning (Tuesday) from Williston, North Dakota. Currently there are some 84 companies involved in the oil industry out there in western North Dakota. There are now 258 wells and it takes between 2000 and 2200 semi loads of water per well

Bound to finish tonight

I'm "bound to finish" "Ruth McLaughlin's "Bound Like Grass" this evening (Tuesday) at six when I'm reading Montana History at the Marias Heritage Center. There's only a few pages left of this sorrowful saga from the Western High Plains

Down on the farm

I mean "way down"...like "down south! My farmer friend Gunsmoke-Gary Gollehon has been in touch with the southern producers and you know those guys. A snow storm has recently left Colorado, Kansas, and Northern Oklahoma, giving them ample moisture and big drifts in some areas

Christmas on South Second Street

I'll be returning to the Marias Heritage Center this evening (Tuesday) at six to share some good reading and history with some of the residents. I would like to thank Marie Ostrem for filling in for me last Tuesday while I was back in Minnesota
