Stand up for our trains

I don't have to tell you how important our Empire Builder is up here on the Hi-Line. For that matter, nationally, Amtrak ridership continues to set records and many of their trains are running full. With the growing population, along with fuel prices, we need more, not fewer, trains

He stole the idea from me!

I note that my friend, the Gabby Cabby, Peter Franklin, the New York City cab driver, has started a "new feature" on his website. It's a new weekly blog about food called "Mrs. Gabby's Kitchen". Funny, I always thought her last name would be and/or should be "Franklin" and not "Gabby"

Bound Like Grass

What a GREAT name for a book. As we continue reading Ruth McLaughlin's book during Montana History at the Marias Heritage Center, the title is starting to resonate more and more with me. Ruth grew up in Eastern Montana and in my opinion, both her parents and her grandparents, along with many of the homesteaders, had one tough miserable life

My Tuesday evening "Montana History" went well last evening at the Marias Heritage Center in Shelby. We have exactly three more stories/chapters to read in "The Doctor Wore Petticoats". I'm really looking forward to starting our next book, "Bound Like Grass"

If you liked last winter, fasten your seat belts

If you enjoyed last winter here in the Golden Triangle, the Puffman Blog has some "good"(?) news for you today. La Nina, the main factor responsible for all the cold and snow last year, is back! According to the National Weather Service's Climate Prediction Center, La Nina conditions have returned and are expected to slowly strengthen and continue throughout the winter months. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration defines a La Nina as a period of cooler-than-normal sea-surface temperatures in the central and eastern tropical Pacific ocean, caused when cold water from deep in the ocean wells up to the surface.

Hey grandpa, what’s for dinner

This first of October weekend is a great weekend in which to work up a hunger in the Golden Triangle. Harvest fests abound with the Brady United Methodist Church holding their fall dinner tomorrow (Saturday) night from 5 to 7 at the Brady Community Hall

There’s a nip in the air

It's amazing, is it not! The last day of August and the weather has taken a turn for fall. Cooler temperatures and all that and you can almost smell the change in the air. That said, there's still some summer activities/events/fun things to do as September comes rolling in

Time to hang up our poles

As summer slowly slips away and Labor Day comes bounding in, it's time to draw the curtain on the Old Fishing Hole for another season. This weekend's program will be the last until spring. It seems like only a second ago that it was the first week in May and I was getting ready for this summer's programs

Time to throw the switch

I was at the Marias Heritage Center last evening (Tuesday) reading our Montana History and I was able to conclude the late William Yenne's (it rhymes with penny) tome, "Switchback". Most interesting, the man spent almost all of his life working for the National Park Service, most of it at Glacier
