A report came rolling in this morning from Tall Todd, the custom cutter guy & Todd plans to be down in the Conrad area around the 20th of this month! The guys have run into green with only a couple of days of harvest left out in Leoti, Kansas. He said that the yields have been "All over the place(!) with a high of nearly 60 bushels & a low of 15. Todd had just "settled up" with a producer, & the winter wheat averaged 29.3 bushels per acre. Test weights have been light; from 49 to 53 pounds, & he thought the elevator dockage was around 50 cents per bushel. He also said that the protein was running about 13 plus; the elevator was not paying for protein, but the elevator was keeping the higher protein separate from the lower, making one wonder if they weren't getting a premium at the Gulf! Weeds have been a problem in the crop, & Todd said that probably 2,000 acres of winter wheat were lost in the Leoti area to weeds! Tall Todd hopes to be moving to Byers, Colorado in the Denver area in the next couple of days & intends to be down in the Conrad area 2 weeks from today on Monday, July 20th. The temperature in Leoti was 102 yesterday (Sunday) with a strong, hot wind, which he thinks should ripen the green wheat fairly rapidly. I'll keep you posted on the crops AND the custom cutter guys on my future Puffman Blogs.
