NCAA Basketball Tournament Report: North Carolina, Kentucky, Kansas and Baylor Advance To Regional Finals

Top seeds Kentucky and North Carolina joined Kansas and Baylor in advancing to the regional finals of the 2012 NCAA tournament on Friday. Here’s a recap of Friday’s NCAA tournament games:

Midwest Regional

North Carolina 73 — Ohio 65 (OT)
Harrison Barnes scored five of his 12 points in overtime and North Carolina beat Ohio 73-65 on Friday night in the Midwest Regional semifinals in St. Louis. Ohio could have taken the lead at the end of regulation, but Walter Offutt missed a free throw with 25 seconds left and the game went to the extra period.

Tyler Zeller had 20 points and 22 rebounds for top-seeded North Carolina (32-5), who advanced to play Kansas in the Midwest Regional final on Sunday. Carolina’s Reggie Bullock had 17 points and 10 rebounds, while John Henson had 14 points and 10 boards for the Tar Heels. North Carolina freshman guard Stilman White had six assists starting in place of injured point guard Kendall Marshall, who fractured his wrist last Sunday.

Offutt led the 13th-seeded Bobcats (29-8) with 26 points, while teammate Nick Kellogg added 14 points and eight rebounds.

Kansas 60 — North Carolina State 57
Thomas Robinson had 18 points and 15 rebounds as Kansas beat North Carolina State 60-57 on Friday night in the Midwest Regional semifinals in St. Louis. North Carolina State had a chance to tie the game at the final buzzer, but Richard Howell’s long heave was short. The second-seeded Jayhawks (30-6) advanced to play North Carolina in the Midwest Regional final on Sunday.

C.J. Leslie scored 18 points for the 11th-seeded Wolfpack (24-13), while teammate Scott Wood added 12 points. Howell had 16 rebounds for N.C. State.

Kansas’ big man Jeff Withey blocked 10 shots, one shy of the NCAA tournament record, while teammate Tyshawn Taylor had 10 rebounds and six points for the Jayhawks. Elijah Johnson added 11 points for Kansas.

South Regional

Kentucky 102 — Indiana 90
Michael Kidd-Gilchrist scored 24 points and grabbed 10 rebounds and Kentucky avenged one of its two losses this season by beating Indiana 102-90 on Friday night in the South Regional semifinals in Atlanta. Despite star freshman Anthony Davis scoring just nine points due to early foul trouble, the top-seeded Wildcats (35-2) advanced to face Baylor in the South Regional final on Sunday. Davis led Kentucky with 12 rebounds and three blocks.

Christian Watford scored 27 points for the fourth-seeded Hoosiers (27-9), who beat Kentucky 73-72 in December thanks to his buzzer-beating shot. Cody Zeller added 20 points and seven rebounds for Indiana.

Doron Lamb scored 21 points for the Wildcats, while teammate Darius Miller added 19 points. With the win, Kentucky advanced to a regional final for the third consecutive year.

Baylor 75 — Xavier 70
Quincy Acy had 20 points and 15 rebounds and Baylor beat Xavier 75-70 on Friday night in the South Regional semifinals in Atlanta. The victory allowed the third-seeded Bears (30-7) to advance to play Kentucky in the South Regional final on Sunday. It’s the second regional final in three years for Baylor.

Tenth-seeded Xavier (23-13), who trailed by as much as 18 points in the first half, cut the Bears’ lead to three, 71-68, with 22 seconds left to play. Baylor converted its free throws to hold off the rally.

Tu Holloway led the Musketeers with 22 points, while teammate Kenny Frease added 18 points. Xavier shot just 3-for-11 on 3-pointers for the game.

Pierre Jackson had 16 points and 10 assists for Baylor, while teammate Perry Jones III added 14 points.
