Anyone who has a brother or sister, likely knows what it's like to compete against them, in the backyard, the indoor court or the field, but rarely would it be for a State Championship. And that's exactly what it turned into last weekend at the State B/C Tennis Tournament.
The State Doubles Championship featured not one, not two, but three of the Walter Brothers from Conrad.  Two of them, Caleb, a So. and Noah a Sr. won the Championship and they're our KSEN/K96 - Bozeman Trophy Athletes of the week. It's one thing to have the brothers play for a State Title, but how about adding one more brother on the other side of the net, not to mention a best friend.   Until the Divisional Tournament this spring, the Evan Walter/Linkyn Denzer team had won every matchup. At the Divisional, and then the State Tournament, the younger Walters' we'll say, prevailed in the match that did go the full 3-sets, with a load of family and friends looking on, as you might expect.   With all of those Walters' and a Denzer in the finals, Conrad came up just one point short of a State Team Championship.
We also had a nomination once again for the great performance of Conrad's Ledger Martin.  Martin won the 400-meter dash, breaking the State Class B record with a time of 47.6. He also took a first in the 800m
Our Female Athlete of the Week is back for a final performance after finishing the best season for a Shelby female athlete ever, and there's still a year to go. Shelby Jr. Regan Torgerson had her best State Meet ever with wins in the 100m and the 200m, a 2nd in the 400m.   She also ran on both of Shelby's qualifying relay team. In that 100m dash, Regan broke the long-standing Class B record in the prelims with a 12.07.  That time just missed the All-Class record by one-one hundredth of a second.  In the 200m, she tied the Class B record, held by Loni Perkins of Conrad in an earlier meet and for a while was the only runner in the State to break 25-seconds.  At the State Meet Regan was again under 25 with a 24.85.   The All-Class record is 24.4, held by Vicky Sturn of Billings West since 1975.
Congratulations to our KSEN/K96--Bozeman Trophy Athletes of the Week, So. Caleb & Sr. Noah Walter of Conrad, and Shelby Jr. Regan Torgerson.  The Athlete of the Week is sponsored locally by McDonald's in Cut Bank. McDonald's honors our Athlete's with two free vale meals each.
