LOCAL SPORTS - "ATHLETE OF THE WEEK"

-Into just the 2nd week of the H.S. sports season and selecting our KSEN/K96 Bozeman Trophy Athlete of the Week was extremely difficult, especially in Football

We’ll start with Volleyball where our Athlete of the Week was an integral part of the CJI Hawks Championship at the Cascade Invitational. The Lady Hawks defeated perennial powerhouse Simms in the Championship match 2-0, 21-18, and 21-16.

The stats reveal the proof was as Wickum totaled 78 assists in the two-day tournament. She added 11 aces with no errors for a 100-percent serve rate. That would have been enough, but she also had 17 kills and 23 digs. Quite a weekend!

On the football field there were several exceptional performances, but the nod goes to CJI JR. Nate Nelson, a 160-pound running back who can fly when the ball is in his hands. Hawks Head Coach Jim Vinson’s comment was similar to Coach Miller when he said, “Nate had a heckuva game!”

Against a solid opponent, NorthStar, Nelson racked up 168 yards on 10 carries and 2 TDs. He intercepted a pass and returned it for a Touchdown and returned a punt for a TD. Coach Vinson says he just missed a kickoff return for a TD but got caught at the 5-yard line.

Nelson’s defensive effort was another story as we already mentioned the interception, but he also had 12 tackles as the Hawks evened their record to 1-1.

Also nominated this week, Hayden Schilling with 250-yards and 5 Touchdowns in Shelby’s win over Harlem. Jr. Roscoe Shaw with 282 yards and 4 Touchdowns in the Cowboys runaway win over Anaconda and Nathan Gunderson with 123 yards, 2 Touchdowns, and 12 tackles in Choteau’s big win over Flint Creek.

Congratulations to our KSEN/K96 - Bozeman Trophy Athletes of the Week, Sr. Lily Wickum of CJI and Jur. Nate Nelson also, from CJI. The Athlete of the Week is sponsored locally by McDonalds in Cut Bank. McDonalds honors our athletes with two free value meals each.
