Tall Todd, the custom harvester fellow, says there's still a lot of grain left to be harvested in the Cut Bank area. Todd has moved north of the border to begin harvesting up Alberta way. Earlier, heavy rains delayed the Canadian harvest & early snows put much of the crop FLAT on the ground. The boys are going to attempt to harvest canola today (Monday), if the soft fields will hold the machines. Todd reports that only about 10% of the crops were harvested BEFORE the rain & sprout from 1 to 2 inches is common in most of the cereal grains. To the north of Lethbridge, late planted crops have been hit hard by the frost as they are late maturing. When Todd was in Montana, he harvested in the Ledger, Conrad, Choteau & Dunkirk areas & said the crops were of good quality & high yields until the heavy rains came. After the rain, the quality was bleached & sprout damage was evident, although not as bad as the Canadian reports. He said he had calls from as far away as Poplar, as producers were looking for combines to cut their crops. He added that the Harvest Brigade that the machinery companies have, that follow the harvest north from Texas, were over in Williston & when he talked with them, they reported that very little harvest had been done, due to the recent rain & snow. Life goes on out here in the Rocky Mountain West.
